Do you need a nudge to quit that thing that doesn't light you up?
Once upon a time, I worked in the Office of Protected Resources for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). We worked to protect marine mammals, sea turtles and endangered fish populations by reviewing scientists' research proposals and assessing the impact their work would have on individual animals, populations and the environment. This is what I was trained to do.
But it didn't light me up.
I enjoyed communicating with scientists. I liked my co-workers. I cared about the larger mission. But sitting in a cubicle and writing what I called "government-ese" drained my energy. I counted down to holidays. I counted down to the end of each workday.
But I was able to manage my energy well. I started most days with a really fun spin class, and I ended the day at swim practice or the gym. On the weekends, I ran away to go hiking in Shenandoah National Park. But that time in between all that sparkly stuff? Ugggghhh, it felt so heavy.
And yet, when a promotion became available, I applied. This was what I was supposed to do.
Then one day, I stumbled across a book at the bookstore next to my apartment building. It was called, "What Color is Your Parachute." I don't have a strong memory of buying or reading the book, but I do remember the staff meeting that happened after I finished reading it. "What Color is Your Parachute" helped me learn that I am an ENFP in Myers-Briggs typology. I read the description, and it resonated so deeply with me. I read about the best and worst jobs for ENFPs and suddenly understood why my job didn't light me up. I read about the other personality types, and I saw how people with other types would be totally lit up doing the very same thing I was doing. So, during that fateful staff meeting, I looked around at my peers and realized, "Oh, they like doing this!"
In that moment, I realized that they were made for this work and I wasn't. And that that was okay. In fact, that was wonderful. I could let them have this job, and I could find something that fed my soul the way this work fed theirs.
A few weeks later, when I was offered that big promotion and all the money and benefits that came with it, I said, "No, thank you" and I gave my two week's notice.
I didn't have another job lined up. I hadn't even applied to other jobs. All I knew was: NOT THIS.
