Breaking Out of Food Prison
Once upon a time (more recently than when I worked for NOAA), I broke out of food prison.
Let's back up a sec and talk about how I first landed myself in food prison. I was bloated. Really bloated. I'd wake up totally fine, but by the end of the day I would look like I was 6-months pregnant. I was confused, concerned and a little bit miserable. I didn't know what to eat because it seemed like everything I ate made me bloated. I would go into the kitchen because I was hungry. But I'd go back and forth between the fridge and pantry a few times before eventually giving up, deciding that I'd rather be hungry for a few hours than feel like I was going to explode.
I talked to doctors, acupuncturists and a nutritionist. Each one told me to eat one set of particular foods and not to eat a different set of particular foods. The nutritionist lovingly guided me through making a low FODMAP diet work for me. It took months, but it eventually worked. But there were rules.
A couple years later, the bloating started again. It wasn't nearly as extreme, but there was no way I was going to let it get to that point again. I reached out to a health coach I knew and asked her how I could heal my gut for good.
She told me not to eat a lot of foods and gave me permission to eat a few specific foods. I wanted help, so I obliged. It didn't go well. It didn't go well at all. Once again, I found myself circling the kitchen, hungry, wondering what to eat. Once again, I would finally give up and opt for hunger over bloating. But this time I was giving up because I didn't want to eat a piece of meat, not because I felt like every piece of food made me bloated. I felt like I was in food prison all over again.
It took a breakfast of sweet potato toast to wake me up. (I've told that story before and I'll tell it again, but not now.) I realized there was a huge disconnect between the foods I was being told I should eat and the foods my body was asking for. Taking teeny tiny baby steps, I decided to ignore the advice I was getting from others and chose to listen to my body instead. At first, I was a little bit scared every time I put something in my mouth, but I gradually learned to trust my body completely. The result: I broke free from food prison.
Whether it's with food or business or decorating your house, it's easy to fall into the trap of believing that other people know what's best for you. But here's the thing: You are the only one who knows you. There's a balance between taking in the information from experts and listening to your body, your soul, your intuition and/or your higher self. Finding that balance can be tricky. Maintaining that balance can be even trickier. The first step is to quit the shit that isn't serving you--even if it served you before. If it's not serving you now, let it go. Make space for magic.
Of course, you don't have to do this alone. Whether you want to quit food prison or a job or social media or a relationship or living in your current home, 4 WEEKS TO QUIT THE STUFF THAT ISN'T SERVING YOU was literally made for you. You'll get 4 LIVE group coaching sessions with me, special projects to do on your own, a team to support your quitting endeavors and so much freedom and magic on the other side. The value of this course is priceless, but if I broke it down into pieces it would be over $2k. You get to play with us for $227. Sign up now.
I love you and I'm so excited for your evolution (or perhaps your revolution)!
