honoring the stillness

Pete and I have landed on the perfect way to watch romantic comedies: We enjoy the hilarity of the early part of the movies, but when the main characters hit the predictable point in the plot where they hate each other, we fast forward to the happy ending.

This method is ideal for movie-watching, but it doesn't work in real life. Despite our desires, we cannot fast forward past the uncomfortable bits--the injuries, illnesses, grief, global pandemics, etc.--in the real world. These experiences often bring us to our knees. The pain can feel unbearable. We want it to end. Sometimes, we can feel the magic on the other side--and we just want to get there.

But first: stillness.

This is where we are all right now as the sun sits in gate 52.

Let me explain. Imagine holding a bike in the air and spinning the wheel. What happens? The wheel spins, but the bike doesn't go anywhere.

Now, put the bike on the ground and spin the wheel. What happens? The wheel spins and the bike moves forward.

The bike needs the stillness of the ground to move forward.

We need to create that stillness right now. Now is not the time to push forward, make it happen or figure it out. We'll just be spinning our wheels (in the air). Now, is the time to be still. A big whoosh of energy is coming. We will be moving forward before we know it. And if we take the time now to honor that stillness, we will be flying when that whoosh comes.

You might be thinking, "but I'm not good at being still." Mmmhmmm. Are any of us, really? Our culture tells us to go and do. We want to know where we're going. We want to know what's around the next corner right now.

Alas, now is not the time. Now is the time to trust like a mofo. Now is the time to lean into your inner projector-ness and enjoy more being and less doing. Hone your wisdom. Read a book (for fun). Stare at the ceiling. Lie in the grass. Be still.

And if you're still not convinced, maybe this will help: Sometimes my triathlon coach gives me a rest day when I don't feel like I need one. And when this happens, I look ahead a few days and discover a monster workout a couple days after that rest day. He gives me the rest day so I'll be at my best for that super challenging workout. Right now, the universe is calling us to be still so we'll be ready to soar with that big whoosh of energy coming our way. We're being called to store up our energy now. We're gonna need it.

I love you.

Love,
Kelsey

P.S. Pete and I recently lost our soul dog and, from our shattered hearts, we made something beautiful. Grieving in the Light is now on The Find Your Awesome Podcast. We got this message from one listener: "There is always something very special about the episodes between you two, but this one in particular has just really struck me in a new way. I can hear your bond through this somehow...you two just seem to really get each other. I hope that's been something to truly lean on during such a hard time. The way you look for the light is such an inspiration to me."
