How comfortable are you with discomfort?
How comfortable are you with discomfort?
I've been asking myself this question recently and wowza the epiphanies have been powerful. I've unearthed old ways of being that weren't even mine and revealed old stories that definitely aren't serving me.
I invite you to join me in this inquiry so you can also experience powerful epiphanies and lovingly release anything that isn't serving you.
Let's dig in:
How do you respond to your own emotions? Our culture is really uncomfortable with certain emotions (like sadness, grief and anger). We're taught to hide these ones, to ignore them, to squelch them and make them go away as quickly as possible. We can do that in so many ways, including numbing or immediately trying to fix them.
And how do you respond to other people's emotions? Seeing our loved ones suffer with challenging emotions can hurt our hearts so much. We may feel like we'll do anything to "fix" their feelings for them.
How do you respond to physical pain? Physical pain is a non-negotiable part of living in a body. Obviously, it's uncomfortable--so uncomfortable that we've been trying to make it disappear since the start of human history.
And how do you respond when someone you love is in physical pain? It can hurt so much to see our loved ones hurting. We'll often do anything to take the pain away.
How do you respond when you're not feeling 100-percent physically? There is literally an entire industry devoted to healing or hiding our dis-eases.
And how do you respond when your loved one is experiencing dis-ease? As a culture, we're extremely uncomfortable with change. We'd like everything and everyone to be "normal" all the time.
A few days of pondering these questions has led me to this final one: How can we cultivate the awareness to notice our discomfort and have the courage to accept and explore the discomfort before we take action to "make" ourselves feel better?
If you feel like sharing anything that comes up for you in this process, I would love to hear it. Reply to this email or write to me at kelsey@kelseyabbott.com.
Remember: Your number one job in this lifetime is to care for your spiritual, emotional, mental and physical self so you can change the world in your own unique way.
I love you.
Love,
Kelsey
