don't dim to fit in

A few years ago, Santa gave me a slap bracelet for Christmas. It's blue with rainbows on it and I love it very much.

This playful little piece of plastic-covered metal brought me so much joy that I decided to bring it with me to an event in New York City.

At that event, I had a photo shoot with a fancy photographer and I brought along the slap bracelet to add some play and joy to the photos.

"Do you want to take that off?" the photographer said, pointing at the slap bracelet, "Did you go out to a club last night?"

"WHAT?! No," I said, feeling the shame and confusion of being wildly misunderstood.

Going clubbing in New York City is very much not my thing. Foot prisons. Nighttime. Oh goodness, the whole thing is not for me. A sweaty bike ride is more my style. I'd choose many things over clubbing--except maybe okra. I might choose clubbing over okra.

"I just, ummm, wanted to spread joy and play," I thought to myself, as I set the slap bracelet aside.

If I could go back in time to talk to that earlier version of me, I wouldn't waste any energy telling her that the entire New York City event was not her jam. She, like the current version of me, needs to try things for herself to know if they're for her or not. Instead, I would whisper in her ear: "Don't dim to fit in. Wear the slap bracelet and own it."

And that's the same message I want to give you today: DON'T DIM TO FIT IN.

I'm a weirdo. You're a weirdo. We are all weirdos.

The world needs our weirdness--and, frankly, more weirdos. The world actually craves our unique ways of being, learning and leading. The world is hungry for our quirks, our individual flavor of love and our very own brand of joy.

The world is desperate for our light--for YOUR light. There's no one else like you. Isn't that wonderful?

Today, on the darkest day of the year, as we are all blessed with the gift of self love that comes with gate 10, accept your weirdness, adore yourself and BE THE LIGHT.

I love you.

Love,
Kelsey

P.S. The phrase "Don't dim to fit in" comes from my beautiful friend Meg Haines. Meg is this week's guest on The Find Your Awesome Podcast. You are in for such a treat! The episode airs on Thursday.
