if you're feeling discombobulated

This time of year can feel a wee bit awkward. The calendar says we're in a brand new year, but the Human Design New Year doesn't start until January 22.

Society tells us that it's time to make a fresh start and do all the things. But we're in the darkest (and typically coldest) part of the year--the time when we're literally designed to snuggle up and look inward.

I used to struggle with this time of year when I was teaching group core and spin classes. All the resolutioneers would come into my classes raring to go and I just craved some quiet time with my regulars.

I feel it every year with triathlon training too. In December, my coach eases back on the training and I feel antsy. I've got tons of energy and often ask for more workouts only to be denied and told to save it up for January. Then, when January rolls around, the first hard workouts hit my schedule and I just want to cruise around on my bike instead.

If you're feeling something similar right now--or if you're someone who often feels like it takes you a few weeks to find your groove in a new year--don't worry, you're totally normal. There's a mismatch between society's expectations and the actual energy during January, and that mismatch can lead to feelings of discombobulation.

Energetically, this is the time when we are called to be quiet, to close out the previous year and prepare for the new year ahead. This period may involve releasing a lot of old energy (stuff you may not have even realized you were still hanging on to) as we are invited to leave things behind in the previous year. We can fight these releases and cause ourselves suffering or we can welcome them as delightful surprises and ride through them with ease. This is all part of the process. We allow the fields to lie fallow for a bit before the next season, we nourish the soil and then we remove the weeds before we plant the seeds. And when that new year comes (on January 22), we'll start out with the refreshing surge of creativity and inspiration that gate 41 injects into all of us.

I love you.

Love,
Kelsey
