let's meditate

The concept of "practicing meditation" first came onto my radar more than ten years ago. I was told by people I respected that meditation wasn't for "people like me," which, I suppose meant people who have been diagnosed with ADHD and love to move their bodies. At first, I believed their words--even though I loved my own experiences of the guided visualizations we did in both high school and collegiate swimming, and the savasana at the end of yoga class, all of which suggested otherwise.

A few years later, I fell madly in love with meditation. I took classes in Tibetan Meditation. I studied Mindfulness Meditation. I tried all the apps. I loved it all, but I struggled to commit to a daily practice. My friend Audrey and I promised to check in daily to make sure we'd meditated. It worked, sometimes.

And then, when we embarked on our first camper adventure--traveling around the Southeastern US for the first three months of 2015, something clicked. In that 8' x 19' box on wheels, I found my groove. I meditated in the same place every day. I meditated at the same time every day. I was unstoppable--literally. I haven't missed a day of meditation since 2014.

Today, we live in a house, but my meditation practice is still very similar. Each morning, I greet the day by standing with my toes in the grass. As I sip my lemon water, I thank the ground beneath my feet and the sky above me. I thank Mama Earth and the universe for the brand new day. I thank them for my life, my body, my health, my path, my loves and anything else that comes through. I offer any pain, worries or fears over to the universe and I ask the universe to fill me up with golden, sparkly, divine love-light. I ask the universe and my guides to lead me. And, before I go inside to meditate, I offer a little prayer: “I am your’s. You are me. I am you. We are one. All is well. All is love. Love is all. May today be filled with love and joy and ease and play and magic and miracles.” And then I go inside to meditate.

Meditation helps me live in alignment with my design. It has helped me through pain and grief. It has helped me be at my best in training and in workouts. And meditation has taught me (the ADHD girl they thought couldn't sit still) to focus like a boss.
