Fast Girls with Elise Hooper
“We have fortunately moved beyond that. But in a lot ways, have we? How are we still photographing women athletes and talking about them? I think there’s still a lot there for us to explore.”
- Elise Hooper
It was such a treat to have a conversation with the author of a book I love. Elise Hooper is the author of Fast Girls, an incredible story of the 1936 U.S. Women’s Olympic track team. Elise is a native New Englander who spent several years writing for television and online news outlets before getting a MA and teaching high-school literature and history. She and I delve into the book she wrote, and how it is both an encouraging story to show how far we’ve come, but also a cautionary tale about how much more we need to accomplish. Whether or not you consider yourself an athlete, there’s plenty for you in this episode and in this book.
“It’s pretty heart-breaking how easily manipulated the system was. I think we like to think a stopwatch is the ultimate authority, but it’s not. It’s all about who is running the stopwatch and who is choosing who gets to get on the starting line.”
- Elise Hooper
“Just go for it.”
